Habits and Traits of the Common Cellar Spider

People often refer to cellar spiders (Family Pholcidae) as daddy longlegs, because most do have long, slender legs. This can create some confusion, however, because daddy longlegs is also used as a nickname for harvestman, and sometimes even for craneflies. Description If you havent guessed already, pholcid spiders often take up residence in basements, sheds, garages, and other similar structures. They construct irregular, stringy webs (another way to differentiate them from harvestman, which doesnt produce silk). Most (but not all) cellar spiders have legs that are disproportionately long for their bodies. The species with shorter legs typically live in leaf litter, and not your basement. They have flexible tarsi. Most (but again, not all) pholcid species have eight eyes; some species have just six. Cellar spiders are usually dull in color, and less than 0.5 inches in body length. The largest known pholcid species in the world, Artema atlanta, is only 11 mm (0.43 mm) long. This species was introduced to North America, and now inhabits a small area of Arizona and California. The long-bodied cellar spider, Pholcus phalangioides, is a very common find in basements throughout the world. Classification Kingdom – AnimaliaPhylum – ArthropodaClass – ArachnidaOrder – AraneaeInfraorder - AraneomorphaeFamily - Pholcidae Diet Cellar spiders prey on insects and other spiders and are particularly fond of eating ants. They are highly sensitive to vibrations and will close in on an unsuspecting arthropod rapidly if it happens to wander into its web. Cellar spiders have also been observed purposely vibrating the webs of other spiders, as a tricky way of luring in a meal. Life Cycle Female cellar spiders wrap their eggs loosely in silk to form a rather flimsy but effective egg sac. The mother pholcid carries the egg sac in her jaws. Like all spiders, the young spiderlings hatch from their eggs looking similar to adults. They molt their skin as they grow into adults. Special Adaptations and Defenses When they feel threatened, cellar spiders will vibrate their webs rapidly, presumably to confuse or deter the predator. Its unclear whether this makes the pholcid more difficult to see or catch, but its a strategy that seems to work for the cellar spider. Some people refer to them as vibrating spiders because of this habit. Cellar spiders are also quick to autotomize (shed) legs to escape predators. Although cellar spiders do have venom, they arent a cause for concern. A common myth about them is that they are highly venomous, but lack fangs long enough to penetrate human skin. This is a total fabrication. Its even been debunked on Mythbusters. Range and Distribution Worldwide, there are nearly 900 species of cellar spiders, with most living in the tropics. Just 34 species live in North America (north of Mexico), and some of these were introduced. Cellar spiders are most often associated with human dwellings, but also inhabit caves, leaf litter, rock piles, and other protected natural environments.

The most obvious difference in lifestyles between these two countries was that the South was a slave proponent and the North was a non-slave proponent. In his article, The Way We Weren’t, David Von Drehle, he states the importance of slavery in context of the Civil War, â€Å"The once obvious truth of the Civil War does not imply that every soldier had slavery on his mind as he marched and fought. Many Southerners fought and died in gray never having owned a slave and never intending to own one. Thousands died in blue with no intention to set one free. But it was slavery that had broken one nation in two and fated its people to fight over whether it would be put back together again.† (Von Dehle, 1). This statement makes clear that slavery was a major factor in instigating the Civil War. The article also mentioned that slavery’s influence on the belligerence of both regions is also distinct with the violence in Kansas, which was later properly labeled â€Å"Bleeding Kansas.† This battle displayed the fight over the acceptance of slavery since, it involved Missouri residents, called Border Ruffians,† to journey to Kansas to forcibly persuade the people of Kansas to become a slave state. We are entering an age where women are gaining more ground in our power and respect in the work force, society, and over own bodies. A person’s body belongs to themselves and no law juristic what they do with it. Abortion should be left up to the decision of the women who carries the fetus. Keeping abortion legal provides women a safer way for removing the fetus from her womb. Illegalizing abortion does not end the mean of abortion: it means the end of safer abortions. Would it be fair for the child th at you allowed them to suffer if health conditions are such that it would affect their quality of life or leave them in a great deal of pain? I find that to be selfish. Denying women control over their own bodies is prejudiced and creates significant social problems. Women to this day are fighting to win political and economic equality. How can we say we accomplished anything when we do not have a say in our reproduction rights? To be able to choose a safe, legal abortion makes many other options possible. Illegalizing abortion is counterproductive in women’s fight for social equality. The issue of abortion is based on moral opinions rather than social, economic, and political facts. Morals can only go so long before they become contradicting. One cannot be opposed to abortion, yet support a war or the death penalty. Abortion should be looked through the person’s eyes of who is carrying the fetus. Some women and girls are not ready to be mothers. Some women and girls are not meant to be mothers. Wireless Technology and Security-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp

Question: Demonstrate a deep understanding of Wireless Architecture and Security Vulnerabilities using examples and appropriate explanations. Answer: Introduction Wireless technology or communication deals with the transfer of information among several points, which are not connected physically or by any electrical conductor. Use of wireless technology is increasing day by day and people are becoming more dependent on technology for improving the quality of living [1]. The wireless technology enhances the quality of work done and makes the work easier. The most commonly used wireless technologies include WIFI based LANs, RFID, WiGig, Bluetooth, cellular network, WMAN, satellite and others [2]. Wireless Security is the security process that protects the network from unauthorized access or some damage to the system or computer network is the wireless security. Identification Important issues of RFID technology are- The systems of RFID can be disrupted RFID uses electromagnetic spectrums that are easy to accumulate by the use of energy at right frequency [3]. This is not so much useful in stores but these electromagnetic spectrums are highly in use in hospitals or in fields like military. The RFID tags that use battery are interrupted to due to break down of battery which hampers the system. Reader Collision of RFID When signals from more than one reader overlap, then reader collision happens [4]. If such thing happens, the tag cannot respond to queries thata re simultaneous. To avoid this issues, many system uses protocol that are anti collision. Analyzing Security Issues- Even after the item that leaves the supply chain, the RFID tag can be read The scanners of RFID are portable that is they cannot make any difference between different readers [5]. The tags of RFID can be read from a minimum distance that may be a few yard or inches. This enables a person standing some distance from the tag to know all the belongings of the person in his purse. The tags of RFID are difficult to remove Customers face difficulty to remove the RFID tags. This is because they are very small in size or they are inside the product which is invisible for the customers to see. Customers are unable to remove the tags. The tags of RFID can be read without the permission of the owner The codes that are present in the belongings of the customers can be read by any intruder as they can be read from a distance part the person. This creates a problem for customers as others get to know what is present in their purse. With high frequency antenna, RFID tags can be read from a far distance RFID tags are made in such a way so that the tags can be read by the reader at minimum distance between tag and reader [6]. High frequency antennas are used to read the RFID tags from a far distance which leads to an issue. The serial number of the RFID tags are unique and can be sequenced to get the credit card number Products with bar codes used UPC (Universal Product Codes) that are implemented in them used in stores that identifies the product with a unique number [13]. When a product having RFID tag is paid with the credit card, then the credit card number is associated with the RFID tag number that is particular. This can help the attacker to get the number of the credit card. Wireless Network design Fig: RFID Wireless Network Design Source ([7]) The system of RFID has three parts consisting of a transponder which is known as tag, the transceiver that is combine with the reader and the antenna for getting the signals. The radio frequency of the radio is used by the antenna to transfer a signal to the tag which helps to activate the tag also known as transponder [7]. When the transponder gets activated, it sends a back signal to the antenna. The data helps to give a notification to the controller of programmable logic that some actions are to be held. The low frequency systems of RFID work over very short distance which is generally of six feet and a frequency of 30-500 KHz frequency is used. High frequency RFID tag uses about a distance of 9 feet and they are usually more expensive than the RFID systems that work on low frequency [9]. RFID does not need direct contact or scanning in line of sight which give san advantage to the technology. Examples and case study of RFID technology Examples- There is many fields where RFID technologies are used in present days [10]. RFID helps to secure the system where this technology is used. Pharmacy uses RFID chips that are embedded in the container of the drug so that they can avert and track theft of highly expensive and rarely available drugs. The Airlines that are continental used the RFID tags with the luggage of the passengers so that they can be tracked when they are lost and also use to detect the location of the bag is the customer plans to change the flight [11]. The toll road of Australia used the technology of RFID so that the taxes are collected without any person working in the toll office. The department of the U.S. government uses the RFID technology to track the supply shipments of the military. Visa cards are the combination of RFID chips and smart cards so that transactions can be made without using coins or cash. Case Study- Liverpool Hospital RFID Case Study A hospital that is located at a distance of approx 50 minute from Sydney CBD is the Liverpool Hospital. The hospital has a bed capacity of 877 and almost 23 operation theatres. It serves as one of the most vital health care in the western Sydney [12]. The hospital provides services like imaging and diagnostic, trauma care or emergency, surgeries, medical and allied health, mental care health and ambulatory care, haematology, paediatric, cardio care and treatment for cancer also. Before 2013 December, the hospital used hand signed out register that is paper based for bringing products that are related to blood to and out of the fridge of the operating theatre [8]. The staff often not maintains the register or puts an inaccurate data in the register. It created confusion among the staffs if the blood cells that are left unused are put back in the fridge or not within half an hour time. There also created a problem that the blood may go to some other patients who does not need the blood . From December 2013 onwards, the management used the technology of RFID signals to reduce the confusion and risks of the patients. The tags of RFID were used inside the hospital to track the location of the blood and products of blood that were needed by the patients for their safety. Other information related to RFID The technology that happens behind RFID RFID uses electromagnetic coupling or the electrostatic coupling in the portion of radio frequency that is used to transmit signals. There is an antenna, a transponder and an antenna for its working. The transceiver reads radio frequency and further transfers the signal to the reader and RF tag that is used in the system [14]. The antenna contains the integrated circuit for the transmission of the data to the reader that transforms the radio waves from the tag into some digital data that are then passed in the systems for more analysis. The data that are present in the RFID tag have two different parts: passive tags and active tags. The radio frequencies that come from the reader are transmitted to their signals by the help of passive tags. Active tags uses on board battery power to transfer the data signal that can be held over a large distance and also power the RAM. The active tags are much more sophisticated than the passive tags. RFID Frequencies The tuning of the frequency of RFID tags is much similar to that of the tuning the radio stations. There must be a similar frequency between the reader and the tag so that communication can be held. Different types of frequencies are used to communicate in RFID technology. The radio waves or the radio frequency work differently at different frequencies, the frequency of the RFID mainly depends on the application it is used for. There are high RFID frequency systems which can cover a distance of 90 feet and there are low frequency of RFID that covers a distance of maximum of 6 feet. Section 2: The alarming key points that come in the case study of Near Field Communication are firstly the risk of eavesdropping. When other intruder comes in the way of the signal that is transmitted by the sender and receiver and get the data or information is known as eavesdropping. A NFC uses the contactless transfer of information; there is a huge chance of eavesdropping. Secondly, data can be corrupted or disrupted. The attacker in this risk mainly attacks the signal to send back wrong irreverent data or may also block the data that is being transmitted. This type of attack is much difficult to detect. Thirdly, the risk that comes in the way of NFC security threat is that the attacker may act as a middle man between the receiver and the sender. The attacker sits in the middle and sends signal to sender pretending as the signal is from the receiver and vice versa. The risks that come next to NFC is the any harmful application that can be downloaded in the device of NFC can send the data of the users credit card to the attacker. Mobile device has also become a difficult issue related to security in NFC. Attackers may have the passwords and ids of the users phone and can get all the bank details of the user. Another risk that comes in the way is the android beam. It is used to transfer the information from one device to another or from a device to a tag or vice versa. Lastly there exists another security issue related to Nokia phones that are enabled by NFC. These phones enable to pair Bluetooth devices automatically. By default, pins or passwords are not required for the connection. For adopting RFID technology the approaches that can be taken as a network administrator of large organization are: The structure of the organization must be studied very nicely. As a large organization, there must be many groups of people, each of the groups must be studied and the risk that may come in their way. The technology of RFID must be very secure and used high frequency so that any attackers may not attack the technology. Getting the benefits after mitigating the risks. For adopting RFID technology the approaches that can be taken as a network administrator of medium organization are: The RFID technology is evaluated against the strategy of the organization. Getting an outline of the risk and benefits for what a change may happen. To work with the external parties. There must be involvement of the employees. The technology must be prototyped. A suitable RFID standard must be found. Testing must be done. The details of the plan must be documented first. How does the diameter or cross-sectional area of a wire affect its resistance Essay Example Essay Example

How does the diameter or cross-sectional area of a wire affect its resistance? Essay Example Paper How does the diameter or cross-sectional area of a wire affect its resistance Essay Introduction I am going to investigate how the diameter, or gauge, of a wire affects its resistance. In order for me to do this, I will need to find as many different diameters of wire as I can. I will cut each one to a reasonable length (probably about 10cm), then connect it to a battery pack and measure the current and voltage (with an ammeter and voltmeter respectively). From these readings I will calculate the resistance, using the formula: R = V / I (Resistance = Voltage / Current) The scale by which the diameter of wires is measured is called SWG (standard wire gauge) which confusingly goes up as the wire gets thinner. However I shall not use this in my graphs, as I do not know enough about SWG to make any worthwhile observations. The gauge of wires can also be measured by their cross-sectional area. Scientific Theory: How does the diameter or cross-sectional area of a wire affect its resistance? Essay Body Paragraphs Some factors affecting the resistance of a wire are: à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ its temperature à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ the metal it is made from à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ its diameter/cross-sectional area à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ its length In metals, the structure of the atoms and their electrons means that there is a â€Å"sea† of free electrons (or delocalised electrons) on the surface of a wire that can move around easily, thus conducting the electricity. This is because the outermost shell of a metal atom has a very weak force acting on its electrons. The amount of electrons that can travel determine a material’s resistance. If there are two wires, one twice as thick as the other, but the voltage is the same on both, then (in the case of the thicker wire) there are twice as many electrons available and so the current goes up. This means that, in the case of the thicker wire, the same voltage is being divided by a larger current – therefore the resistance comes out as less. This is the same as if you were t o connect several resistors in parallel in a circuit, as this reduces their resistance too. The greater the cross-sectional area (of a pipe or wire), the less the resistance. This is easily explained in a similar way to water flowing through a pipe. If a pipe has a large cross-sectional area, then more water can flow through at any given time, and it will flow through more easily. I will construct a graph of diameter against resistance and another of cross-sectional area against resistance. I shall expect them to be similar. Range of results: SWG Diameter (mm) 20 0.9 22 0.71 24 0.56 26 0.45 28 0.4 30 0.31 32 0.28 I will refer to the diameter of the wires with their diameter in millimetres as opposed to using SWG (Standard Wire Gauge). According to my scientific theory, this would give my graphs a negative correlation. Prediction: I believe that as the diameter increases, so the wire’s resistance will decrease, thereby showing a negative correlation. This is based on my scient ific theory. Method / Apparatus: various different gauges of wire an ammeter a voltmeter a battery pack crocodile clips Firstly I found the different gauges of wire and cut a 15cm length of each. This was long enough to be useful, but not so long as to be unmanageable. Then I connected the battery pack to the ammeter – this was connected in series – and then the voltmeter – this was connected in parallel. I then used the crocodile clips to connect the wires from the ammeter to the ends of the length of wire. I observed the readings from the meters and recorded them, then used them to calculate the resistance of that particular piece of wire. I repeated this for each gauge of wire. Diagram: Fair Test: In order that my results were as accurate as possible, I made sure that all my wires were made of the same material, Constantan. This alloy (of nickel and copper) maintains the same resistance no matter what temperature it is – I used it so that the results w ould not be compromised by the wire heating up and changing its resistance. My wires were all cut to?2mm of the same length – this was because the length of the wire could affect the resistance, and the factor I was investigating wasn’t length. I observed this from my graph. I constructed my graph using diameter in mm on the x-axis and Resistance (?, or Ohms) on the y-axis. It showed a negative correlation, but had this weird thing going on at the end – an anomaly. I was able to draw quite a clear curve of best fit. The graph proved my theory correct, because as the diameter increased so the resistance of the wire decreased. Evaluation: I believe the experiment was a success, as it proved my theory correct and my graph showed a clear curve of best fit. However there was an anomalous reading, right at the end. This may have been a mistake in reading the meters, or a mistake in calculating the resistance. To improve the accuracy and fairness of my experiment, I could have done the following things: à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ used a more reliable power source (the power flow from battery packs weakens with use), à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ cleaned the connections within the battery pack (corroded or dirty connections can affect power flow), à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ used more accurate am- and volt- meters (i.e. with a greater number of decimal places), à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ widen my range of results by connecting the circuit to more than one cell of the battery pack, à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ cut more lengths of wire from different rolls (one roll alone may not be representative of that particular gauge) as defects etc. may affect the results. The novel should not be permitted in our schools because the language is offensive, there is an abundance of violence and disturbing behavior, and it shows no positive side aspect of not only life in a ward but also of society. The language in one flew over the cuckoo’s nest is atrocious and vulgar. The language that the author uses to convey the feelings of the patients and members of the ward is degrading and unnecessary. There are numerous opportunities for the author to portray his mind-set and the mind-set of the characters with the use less offensive words. Appropriateness of Assessment Tools for the Achievement Of Literacy Essay

Appropriateness of Assessment Tools for the Achievement Of Literacy Goals - Essay Example The level of literacy that an individual should acquire is a matter of personal choice depending on his or her inclination and the role that he or she will be required to play in society. This offers scope for learning choices with regards to the tools of learning. This compels the teacher to personalize his or her pedagogy to meet the needs of the individual learner in the group. Training in literacy should be connected to actual use of it in real-time situations. The social context in which we live is democratic and multicultural and literacy training should take into consideration these aspects of our society. A comprehensive literacy assessment should test whether these tasks are fulfilled in actual end product of instruction. Based on the realization students develop on a dynamic continuum and they have different rates of progress, teaching should be tailor made to suit the needs of individual learner. Dr.Bonnie Campbell Hill has analyzed the levels of achievable benchmarks for different age groups and the level of competencies that students should have in that age. By bringing also the parents as active partners he has reiterated the concept that learning is a social activity that extends beyond the four walls of the classroom. The benchmark books are chosen by Dr.Hill to give the student a chance to relish reading and experience success (Hill, 2001). Page 3 Assuming that we have a curriculum that is apt for the American student, the effectiveness of the learning process will depend on the tools of assessment that are employed by the teacher. Standardized tests are inadequate as diagnostic tools. This is because they provide only final answers, record scores in numbers, and are administered to a group. They do not give any clue to the skill of the learner in problem solving. Standardized tests do not accommodate the individual differences of the learners. American society is multi-ethnic and standardized tests do not take into account this aspect of our culture. According to Wagner, Assessment methods do not need to be major entrepreneurial enterprises, but rather just robust enough to answer key policy questions at the national and local levels (Wagner, 2003). In order to make learning effective the approach should be primarily learner centered. The child, its parents, the community and the need of the American Society for resources should be the main factors of consideration. The education research around the globe has developed what is called the authentic literacy testing movement and Page 4 American educators have whole-heartedly embraced this methodology because of its interface with the American reality. One important tool that can deliver results is the student portfolio. In this method learner's activities are documented throughout. These include short paragraphs, essays, longer writing samples as well as collections of student-authored books, videotapes of plays written and produced by the class. This portfolio does not capture a moment of student's performance; it gives a wider view of the stage-by-stage

Medicine and Mathematics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Medicine and Mathematics - Essay Example This can, probably, be a meticulously suitable premise of physiology which is a quantitative science. Today, mathematics is applied in the every-day life while facilitating health care for people around the world. Statistical graphs of epidemics, success rates of treatments, X-rays and CAT scans are some of the examples where mathematics is applied by all mathematical professionals. CAT Scans are one of the most advanced ways in which medical veterans bring math into use. A CAT scan is a special kind of x-ray known as a Computerized Axial Tomography Scan. A standard x-ray is capable of providing with a two-dimensional view of a specific part of the body. Further, if a smaller bone is concealed amidst the x-ray machine and the larger bone, it is not possible to view the smaller bone which is like a shadow (Article, 2009). The process has developed commonly and it is quite difficult to understand the way it has developed into a miracle. CAT scan has the capability of providing an image of what a real segment would look like, however, without any real slicing (Phillips, 1999). This technique is strongly reliant on the X-ray penetrability of various tissues, similar to the conservative X-ray imaging. However, the difference lies with the fact that here, as an alternative to a single 2-dimensional X-ray image, a sequence of 1-dimensional X-ray images, which is clicked from various angles, is coalesced again mathematically into a single image of a 2-dimensional segment. Mathematics allows the reconstruction of a 2-dimesional cross-section of an entity from a sequence of 1-dimensional samplings of similar density. This technology is called the Radon Transform (Phillips, 1999). 2.2 Analysis of DNA DNA filaments are comprised of a number of joint molecules called nucleotides. Particular groups of these molecules tend to perform definite functions that are known as genes which reside in the nuclei of cells. Genes are comprised of codes for manufacturing essential substances for the body. With efficacious coding for proteins, genes have the propensity of recognizing the sequence of events which produce the traits of bodies, such as from blue eyes to blond hair, or even allergies. The passage of genes through generations helps passing on the traits as well. In case of alteration of the genes, traits are altered too, often leading to harmful results. Fascinatingly, segments of DNA tend to break and unite, thereby, scuffling the order of genes. As a result, for the reason that such changeovers possess mathematical prospects, there are various features of DNA which can be derived by knowing such prospects (Casey, 1992). Here, mathematics matches genetic sequences and such researches give way for many other aspects of genetic research as well. 2.3 Molecular Modeling Various algorithms have been deduced for molecular modeling

Tortilla Flat Essay Example for Free

Tortilla Flat Essay Tortilla Flat, written by John Steinbeck was set after World War One in a district of Monterey named Tortilla Flat. This story was about not only the less than glamorous lifestyle lived by Danny and his fellow â€Å"paisanos†, but the importance of friendship through bad times over material values. All of the major events carry with them a strong implication of this theme which is often reflected through the characters’ decisions. Along with an incredibly ironic yet powerful friendship based on morals, this story is also is about appreciating the simple things in life. Each problem encountered by this band of friends was meaningful in its own way. As a reader the most significant events and characters were Danny, his death, and Pilon. Danny began this tale from the beginning as more of a pathetic, alcoholic, useless man, but slowly progressed and evolved into a character that represented unity and leadership. He, being the owner of the two houses, was a clearly distinct leader and executive decision maker among these friends. His symbolic role in the aspect of unity is represented through the repercussions of his death. When Danny goes insane and leaves, the men still have hope he will be back and although it does not appear to be a loss without him they are truly nothing without Danny. These men carried with them throughout the whole story the importance of friendship in their conscience but voluntarily left that behind because it was obvious that they needed him. While Danny represented unity and leadership among friendship, Pilon was a symbol of good intentions and friendship as a whole. With every move Pilon made he always questioned it was a selfish choice or how he could help his friends with the money. Although his many deposits often resulted in drinking with his companions, they often started with the idea of paying rent, giving a gift, or making amends. Pilon was truly a good soul that did not have the funds to support his charitable ideas. His most charitable actions involved him recruiting new friends, but were ultimately his acts of kindness attempting to help ones in need. All of these were covered with ironically immoral decisions to do very virtuous deeds making Pilon seem more of a fool then a good man. These two were also portrayed the hardships faced after the world war. Danny and Pilon both embody this theme of friendship so greatly that the wrong they do is almost inferior to their good values in life, which were very influential to all of the characters in this novel. Unity and virtues became so ironically personified by Steinbeck through these characters to capture and portray his themes. This novel was very well written. The imagery and wording Steinbeck uses helped to visualize and connect while coherently getting across his point. Steinbeck’s purpose in writing this novel was to help to not only connect many with the struggles of the lower class, but to personify unity through very likeable characters. The purpose seemed vague until the connection to the characters grew stronger which was the start to understanding the book. His themes came across strongly and were accomplished very well. As for passages in which the theme was most established, many showed them in a more powerful way than others. As some of the last words describing not only the death of Danny, but the demise of the faithful companionship, when the house burns and the friends all go their separate ways can be best summarized as, Thus must it be, O wise friends of Danny. The cord that bound you together is cut. The magnet that drew you has lost its virtue†. Danny was truly the most important of the men although he seemingly did nothing but drink he was what held them together. With the fire beginning to start, it was symbolic of everything. The end, the friendship, Danny’s death, and unity were all so greatly symbolized by the fire. That scene perfectly isolated the themes all at once and ended the novel in a great way. Tortilla Flat would be a good read for kids starting in high school. Because the concept of the story is harder to connect to and there are many implications leading to humor, many younger than fourteen or fifteen might not understand the book. This book contains an extensive amount of imagery making it very easy to visualize and Steinbeck’s elaboration helps to make the story seem real.

Interrelation of Physical and Social Characteristics in Society :: Anthropology

Interrelation of Physical and Social Characteristics in Society Cultures on this planet are infinitely diverse and quite different from each other as well. Many of the customs and rituals that are practiced in the United States are diverse in nature as well, but are similar in more ways to each other than to cultures in other regions of the world. It seems that a great deal of a culture’s core stems from their surrounding environment, and the pressures that this puts on those trying to live there. A culture’s physical and social characteristics are interrelated, and play an important role in the development of a society and the personalities of the people. Marriage, jobs, and politics are all areas of a culture that are influenced by a person’s environment. In the U.S., monogamy is the â€Å"normal† structure of marriage, and is a logic choice considering the type of environment we live in. Independence training is emphasized to prepare people for obtaining the highest standard of living in the U.S. Being better than another is important in this society, and is stressed to most people from a very early age. Living away from one’s parents is not only expected but also often desired by both the child and the parents. Mobility is a huge factor in the work force, and the less one is â€Å"tied down† to, the easier it is to make the necessary transitions. In other societies, forms of marriage other than monogamy make more sense, and make life easier. For example, the !Kung San live together in small groups, in which everyone takes care of all the children, and much of life is not privately shielded from the group. Their openness and sharing of childcare and lifestyles is also portrayed in their food gathering activities. The villagers gather food and then distribute it to not only their own â€Å"nuclear† family, but to others as well. It would be too hard to survive on your own in this environment, so the group structure works well. Inheritance of lands and goods also plays an important role in the structuring of societies and families in other cultures outside of the U.S. Cultures such as the Inuit, Tibetans, and Marquesan Islanders of Polynesia, practice polyandry, the marriage of more than one man to a single woman. This is common for brothers who do not wish to divide up their father’s lands, so they will marry the same woman and both retain the entire estate.

Pillars of Citizenship in the U.S.

The pillars of citizenship in our country, the United States of America, have been constructed through three essential documents. The Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights have furnished much of our countries civil rights and liberties of the US political system. The Declaration of Independence of 1776 was a document that stated official separation between the 13 colonies and Great Britain. The Declaration mainly argued for the colonies most central law, which was that â€Å"all men are created equal† and there are certain unalienable rights that governments need to respect such as the â€Å"right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. † It also argued â€Å"Intolerable Acts† would be considered unconstitutional under the new nation. It also argued if a government is not supporting the rights described in the document, citizens should and could overthrow that government as devoted citizens. The declaration of Independence was created to form a new government that’s main duty was to support the rights of citizens through only the power of the people that it represented. The US Constitution was constructed after we won our independence from Great Britain, which resulted in the formation of our new Government. It was the foundational document that setup all of our nations branches of our newly constructed Government. As a whole, this documents main purpose was the construction of our relationship between the Federal Government and the United States Citizens. When the US Constitution was constructed there was many debates between the Anti-Federalists and Federalists. The Anti-Federalists were scared that there would be to much Government regulation and the citizens would lose some of their rights. In regards to this, both sides agreed on the US constitution, but only if there would be a construction of a â€Å"Bill of Rights†. The Bill of Rights sole purpose was to maintain the United States ci tizens liberties including freedom of speech, religion and the right to a fair trial by a jury.In all, the construction of these documents each argued for the right of the US citizens to be treated with respect, fairness, and of course, equally. There were numerous abuses that were committed by King George III that are documented in the Declaration of Independence towards the colonists of the United States. In result to this, each of these documents were created because the colonists were tired of the King of Great Britain.

Camille needs a dress to go to a wedding in three weeks. It’s an elegant wedding, and so she’s looking for a dressy dress, but rather comfortable because she really plans on dancing! And of course, the dress shouldn’t be too expensive, because Camille doesn’t have a big budget. Camille enters in a shop and finds a pretty skirt, long, fluid and light. But if she buys a skirt, she’ll need to buy a top, and also a jacket for the church. It’s too complicated. No, Camille definitely is looking for a dress, period. There is a blue dress which is not bad, rather elegant, and well cut. But it’s linen, and Camille doesn’t iron. This dress is going to wrinkle, and also linen shows sweat marks. No, it’s really not practical. Too bad, it was pretty and cheap. Tant pis. In another store, Camille spots a little short dress, sleeveless, and with a pretty printed fabric. And it’s really not expensive! It’s marked down, and it’s really a good bargain. She tries it on. Oh la la, it’s a disaster. This dress doesn’t fit her at all. It’s too short: it’s not good quality and the cut is not becoming on her at all. Camille thinks it makes her look fat. Too bad. Talking to a French Salesperson La vendeuse suggà ¨re une autre robe, complà ¨tement diffà ©rente. Elle est trà ¨s longue,  gris bleu, assez moulante avec un grand dà ©colletà © dans le dos, et des petites bretelles. Camille lessaie. The salesperson suggests another dress, entirely different. It’s very long,  blue-grey, rather  form  fitting with a deep low cut in the  back,  and short straps. Camille tries it on.  Ouch, it gets stuck at the thighs†¦ the eternal problem†¦ Camille asks for a bigger size. She manages to slip on the dress, but it’s a real disaster. The dress is too tight on the  buttocks, too small on the chest, and on top of  all  it’s way too long. Camille feels fat, ugly and vulgar†¦ not at all the desired look. This shopping day is not really going as planned. Darn. In a shop window, Camille sees a small dress with white polka dots. It’s classic, but has a pretty cross-over over the chest area shape, and is loose fitting on the legs. It has short sleeves, and the fabric looks fluid and comfortable. Camille enters the shop, asks for her size, and tries on the dress. Ah, this is much better. Camille feels very good: the dress is soft, and it falls nicely on her. It’s not too long, nor too short, and makes her look thinner. And besides, Camille has some black shoes  that will go perfectly well with it. Finding the Perfect Outfit in France La vendeuse lui montre une veste assortie. Lensemble est parfait, assez sobre mais chic. Cest un peu plus cher que ce que Camille voulait dà ©penser, mais à §a reste  raisonnable, et en plus cette petite robe sera facile à   remettre. En fait, cest parfait ! Mission accomplie ! The salesperson shows her a matching jacket. The outfit is perfect, rather simple but elegant. It’s a bit more expensive than what Camille wanted to spend, but it is still reasonable, and besides, this unpretentious dress will be easy to wear again. In fact, it’s perfect! Mission accomplished!
